As Calgary gets hit by the latest blizzard to roll through town, there is some tremendous skiing in the rockies today. But let’s start with the official weather report from Environment Canada:
I can confirm that there is significant accumulation in Calgary as of noon today. However, the webcams are showing only light snow and Sunshine and very little precip at Lake Louise or Kicking Horse. Fernie on the other hand is giving me heart palpitations. First the snow cam…. That’s about 35cms folks. So far…
This next webcam shot makes wish I lived in Fernie. Beautiful pow day, empty chair lift. This would be one of those days at Fernie that you’d remember for years.
Castle Mountain is also enjoying fresh snow from this storm system but they’re not open yet. Only the backcountry skiers will be enjoying the turns today.
I had to check one last resort, Revelstoke and they are getting the sweet pow today. I love it when Gnorm gets completely buried. It looks like the snow at Revy has stopped for now but the amount of snow still gives me hope that Kicking Horse, Louise and Sunshine may get some of this snow later today. I’m guessing the system is pounding Roger’s Pass as we speak. SO… the post header is a shot from Revy’s opening weekend (photo credit Ian Houghton). Now imagine another 25cms on top of that!!
I found this next video on the powderquest website, nuestros hermanos! There are some nice Go Pro vids and a few photos that capture a group of friends skiing the backcountry in Chile. As much as I like watching ski and snowboard videos, the thing that really caught my interest in this clip was the hot pool. If you’re interested in skiing or touring in Chile then I encourage you to check out powderquest. Some day I’m going to go there!
Kicking Horse is reporting 56cms in the last 48hrs and 100cms for the week. Opening Day on Dec 13th will be stellar if this keeps up.
Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a recent video but I’m guessing that staff are getting in some pretty amazing turns this morning. Here’s a video from last year in case you’ve forgotten how awesome it is at ‘The Horse”.
I just finished watching a few of the Salomon Free Ski videos from last season and found them to be really well produced. Now I’m subscribed and will share the really good ones from time to time. But let’s start with the most recent vid, posted only 14 hours ago.
At the Banff Mountain Film Festival last weekend we watched a movie that featured Xavier skiing some insane lines in Antarctica. What struck me is that he brought along this young american rider who actually bailed on the last crazy descent. Xavier is known for skiing the steepest stuff at mind boggling speed – and for riding the craziest sh&*%. Check out this vid and you’ll see what I mean.
Getting pumped for some turns with this weekend’s fresh snowfall. Here’s a little sampling of pics from the CMH Heliski blog that will get you tuning your skis. Can you guess where the last couple shots were taken?
A couple years ago I was having lunch with a couple of the business development guys at my company. I asked them what I could do to get more traffic to powderwatch. ‘Naked skier videos’ was their answer. ‘If you want tons of traffic you’ve got to post naked skier videos.’ Of course neither of them were willing to participate in my first video and their great idea was forgotten – until today. This video came across my inbox and I couldn’t believe someone actually did it. And attracted millions of viewers in the process I’m sure. Enjoy!

I stumbled across a project on Kickstarter today initiated by Calgary entrepreneur Jan Kowalczewski. His company Templar Skis is close to achieving its funding goal of $30,000 but there are only 48hrs left in the campaign. Now is your chance to contribute to the success of something new and exciting. For a pledge of $525 to $625 you can get your hands on one of the first 3 prototypes produced by Templar Skis. What could be cooler than skiing on some wicked proto skis developed right here in Calgary? This is a fantastic opportunity to get involved in the testing of a prototype ski that has an innovative design and promises extremely high performance. Bragging rights will be yours!
The Ski Design:
Following months of research and testing we came up with a novel CNC machined core design that incorporates 3 woods ( Bamboo , Poplar and Paulownia ) – we built a finite element model and rigorously tested each combination to come up with a unique core concept. We then optimized it for more torsional rigidity and fine tuned its behavior in a carbon semi cap design. We chose carbon, as its flex properties out-perform conventional fiberglass and Kevlar designs. We also designed a bracing system that lets us tweak the manufacturing process and the carbon sheet properties to optimize ski flex. What you will notice is that our skis have beefy cores greatly improving performance and at the same time they are surprisingly light. All together this new technology has proven incredibly versatile and will allow skiers to get the most out of their skis.
Our top-sheet graphics:
We are tired of seeing dark and washed out colors on skis! So we set out to make sure that what we design will look stunning in snow! We chose a palette of colors by testing each of our designs in snow, on sunny days and overcast days.
People thought we were mad by dropping beautiful prints in snow and tweaking every color. But I think you will agree with us that the results are stunning!
Three models are to be produced this season.
The Duchess (Ladies) / The Noble (Gentlemen): This is a super versatile ski 90 mm underfoot. It has a rockered design and will blow you away with the how easy it is to turn and enjoy all types of terrain from resort to off piste!
The Knight: This is our 100 mm underfoot big mountain ski with a traditional camber. Designed for the more technical skiers that choose stability in their big mountain skis – The tail is also engineered in such a way as to let you take some seriously nice drops.
The Petard: This is our 120 mm underfoot ski that is designed to bomb down a mountain. This ski is for someone who likes to do big turns and go real fast in powder.
