Conditions will be perfect for the family day weekend this year.  We’re looking a highs around zero or warmer for Fri/Sat and only slightly cooler on Sun/Mon.  It will be spring skiing at it’s best.  The mountains received a decent amount of snow last week so surfaces will be soft and the icy conditions from a couple weeks ago should be long gone.  Maybe high traffic areas like the Larch run at Lake Louise will get scraped down by the crowds after a couple days but there will be plenty of other terrain to enjoy.

There isn’t any significant snow in the forecast for the Canadian Rockies so the powder freaks will likely be avoiding the crowds at the resorts this weekend.  Family Day weekend is my favourite weekend for backcountry touring.  Then I hit the resorts the following weekend when the big crowds have subsided.  But for a lot of people with kids, this is the big opportunity to get out and play in the mountains.  This year it’s a 5 day long weekend thanks to PD days today and Friday.  The forecast for tomorrow is looking fantastic so I’d recommend getting out there early.  Next time I go resort skiing I’ll be getting up at O Six Hundred!
